Rothenstein, William, Sir (1872-1945)
Sir William Rothenstein studied at the Slade School for one year beginning in 1888. Afterwards, he entered the Academie Julian in Paris where he made the acquaintance of Whistler and was inspired by Pissarro and Degas. His early works were painted in Whistler’s style. After 1898, Rothenstein turned to portraiture. Later in his career, he was a respected teacher and taught his conservative views as the principal at the Royal College of Art from 1920 to 1935.
